5 out of 5 stars Mostly USER ERROR   July 15, 2010
Craig E. Dunn (joliet, IL)
This line is excellent--and I have seen and heard others complain about bird nesting and losing lures--99% of those issues are user error! You have to be careful spooling your line--keep a steady amount of pressure on the line and keep the pressure point at at least the 1st eye of your rod away while spooling. As for losing lures, almost everyone I know who used braided line loses a few--because we don't tie braided line knots and this stuff will un-knot itself in 1 or 2 casts--and that again is our fault, not the line.
It may take a little more care to prep te line on your reels, but it is well worth it if you fish in and around a lot of structure. I fish for big bass with ultra-light tackle and generally the reel or the rod gives out before this line on those fish.
Read the directions carefully, spool you r line with consistency and learn some new knots and you will have no trouble with any of the issues people are listing on here.

2 out of 5 stars not so good.   February 16, 2010

it is very strong. if you like mono stick with it. no give, tangles are impossible to sort and buries on your spool.

4 out of 5 stars Still Good After All These Years   July 12, 2009

I finally chickened out and decided to re-spool some of my reels. One of my bait casting reels had 15 to 20 year-old Spiderwire on it. It was all I ever used for trolling for macs and steelhead. After one or two decades it still had no memory, always played out straight and true. I tried some highly touted lines from other companies and had lots of problems with line memory, kinks, loops, snarls, backlashes, etc., and finally ordered more Spiderwire. The "Stealth" moniker didn't sell me, though when I tried it out yesterday (on a new spin casting reel) on macs, I couldn't see that darn stuff against the water when I snagged up on a rock - needed to maneuver the boat around it, tried unsuccessfully to free it - the moss green really IS stealthy. The line seems just as good as the original, no kinks, no snarls, no backlashes, and VERY tough. I couldn't break it, finally had to cut it. Now I'll see if it'll take another 15 years of abuse! I noticed one thing that might be a small negative. I used 20 lb test, but the line diameter is still pretty small. After hauling in a few fish in the 10 lb range, the line had a tendency to bite or pinch tightly between strands on the reel, so when I opened the bail to hand play a little extra line out, it felt "sticky", wouldn't spool out without help. However, I got good, long casts, and it didn't seem to be a problem. It may be that if you caught large fish on lighter lures than I was using, it might not play out as well, due to sticking, but I'm speculating. It works well with heavy lures. The old, non-teflon coated Spiderwire didn't bite or pinch between the strands.

I was very disappointed in this product. For years I've been contemplating using this type of line, and was looking forward to casting out and not seeing twirly string floating on the water. I loaded my Zebco 33 with 10 pound test and went out for cats. On the first cast, I went out about 10 feet before it snagged in the reel. I spent several minutes casting, pulling several armlengths of string out of my reel, reeling up and repeating until I could cast about 40 yards without hanging up. After a successful cast, I let my bait sink to the bottom and caught a catfish about 5 minutes later. Fish landed and bagged, I went to cast out again. This time, the line went out about 4 feet before it snagged. I repeated the process twice before I gave up and packed that rod and reel away. The first chance I get, that reel will be restrung with monofilament and all my Spiderwire Stealth is going straight in the trash!

I put this line on a high-end fresh-water spinning reel, and after several months, used it for the first time. I lost two lures because the line broke while casting, and after the second cast the reel had the worst backlash I have ever experienced. And that was on a spinning reel!
